Portland Stone, why is it so special?

A fascinating video from British Pathé (1955) exploring Portland Stone and it’s uses around the world. Portland proffers no ordinary stone but one of Britains most treasured natural resources. Known for both its easily recognisable and varied features, and for its contribution to the character of the nation’s capital city.

Chesil Beach Clean!

Thanks go out to the many volunteers who help clean up the litter on Chesil and the Fleet. Most recently the local wildfowlers and the Dorset Countryside Volunteers have both carried out litter picks on the Beach and Reserve. Click above to Join the Facebook group.

The Portland Windmills

The Portland Windmills are two disused stone towers which were used as windmills from at least the early 17th century. They are located south of Easton village and the east of Weston village and are the only historic windmill remains to survive in Dorset. You can find the Windmills HERE

Tout Quarry

Walk the disused quarry of Tout. Stone sculptures and scarce wildlife make this former quarry an interesting and unusual site to visit for all the family. It is located within the north-west corner of Tophill. In places there may be loose stones underfoot. You can find Tout HERE

Prison Museum

It covers the entire history of HM Prison Portland, from the original 1848 adult convict establishment, the Borstal period from 1921.
